QLD’ER COTTAGE

Framing the entry of a Qld’er requires the appropriate placement & combination of materials and plants to create that iconic character. This Wilston residence we completed last year takes elements from the more temperate Australian and English gardens and replicates them here in our warm & humid conditions to produce a classic cottage effect.

Plants: We sourced plant stock from nurseries in Qld, NSW and VIC to achieve the exact look our awesome clients wanted. Camelia Jennifer Susan’s create rhythm along the front verandah, whilst Gaura, Angelonia, Little Emerald’s and Hip Hop Euphorbia’s splash seasonal colour over the top of the Box hedge (Buxus japonica) that anchors and delineates the garden edge from the lush Empire Zoysia lawn.

Sloping sites can provide an opportunity to create a secluded retreat at the lower storey level. This stunning residence incorporates a private courtyard below the street level as the “front yard”, with plants taking over the wall and scenting the air with subtle notes of Magnolia and Jasmine flowers throughout the seasons. The Atlantis drainage cell allows the Jasmine to latch on and climb the wall nicely.

Plants: Radermachera 'Summerscent' & Michelia 'Coco' provide the screening bulk in the planters, while the Russelia ‘Lemon Falls’ look great cascading down over the walls and the climbing foliage of the Pandorea ‘Lady Di’ really pops against the white walls. Bookending the lush green planter foliage are Magnolia x Alba and 'Bubbles'. Not a bad place to relax on the weekend!

Plants by: @blackallrangenurs Plantings along the side of a house can be tricky to get the balance right... but this mix of foliage, leaf colours and the cascading screening potential of the 'Lulu' Lilly Pillies works a treat! My Great great great Grandfather's residence Cintra House has new owners. Would love to see its continued preservation for further generations! Today's plant deliveries... Looking forward to getting these in the ground. Plants by:

Sometimes the eye is less confused when you take colour out of the equation. This overhead view provides crisp detail of the materials, contrast and form of a recent coastal project.
Image by @binod.ckb Lush, layered and leafy describes this linear entrance to these apartment gardens I started designing shortly after the 2011 floods. Plenty of variety from lime to dark green colours, and leaves that are fine n tight, large n round, clipped n soft, serrated n palmate. Next week's new design work will be my 11th stage at this lovely complex... Hope to get it done before the 2020 Brisbane Open and ATP Cup! Perfect weekend in the backyard! This pool was built into the corner of the sloping block creating an amphitheatre of fun for the kids. Separate stepper entries to the pool through the lawn framed the openings and separated the kids from the grown-ups too! Very enjoyable collaboration with @michaeldoughertydesign @pandrleebuilders @philippeantelme Lush turf that you just want to lie on...! Had a quick look at our Hendra project with @philippeantelme and it's starting to take shape. Lots of white flowers and shades of green, green and more green in this palette! Cuban Cigars (Calathea lutea) are one of the best foliage plants popping out at this time of year... These ones provided a nice textured backdrop + contrast to the foreground colours & flowers of this entry garden and will always frame the Canary Island date palms as it keeps ascending.

#horticulture Planting design revisit: soft + lush foliage with linear repetition and colour contrasts that enhance the rust tones in the Lichen splitstone walling (location opposite Pat Rafter Arena entry). Flashback to setout day at Taringa backyard project. This is the "busy-ness" of the plant-out on a sloping block before digging in and mulching... .

#landscapearchitecture Spotted this awesome winding path by @sourcedandsorted today next to a site visit. Fantastic use of Dichondra tiles and lovely arrangement of planting across the whole yard. Great work by Lindy and Marg and looking forward to their photos and seeing it mature over summer! Great job Energex, you win! 🤯🤬😱 Top result... Images of my Silver Medal winning courtyard project at Alderley. The pool area and lower service court were transformed to provide our clients' family with multiple levels of spacious, functional living areas to relax in day & night, all year round. Lush layered foliage, durable natural materials, adjustable RGB lighting, seating area and fire pit with a hidden automated services room have been crafted into the design.

#gracevilleimports Thanks Melbourne, you've been great as usual! Had a great time with the National Council planning a great 2020 for Landscape Designers, attending the National Awards and getting out into some of the beautiful gardens around town. Jackets heading straight to the cupboard for another year...! ☀️🏜️🥵 Very happy to have received a Silver medal at last night's National Landscape Design Awards for my recent courtyard project at Alderley. Thanks to everyone involved especially my mate and builder Jason James and our lovely clients.
Project details & pics to come...

#landscapedesign #aildmmember Looking forward to seeing this curvy Infinity pool, sunken fire pit and tennis court overlooking a lake on acreage at Redland Bay get built over the next few months. Check out the pic of the honed & polished aggregate garage floor getting finished - it's so reflective! (Boralstone Sisal) Same surface will be getting poured soon on the Alfresco, terrace and pool coping.

#redlandbay This weeks harvest: Lilly pilly berries from my hedges of Syzygium australe 'Narrow Leaf' from Aspley Nursery. Great eating, a bit like a Nashi Pear or a tart Apple, just watch out for the seed.... Our new Define sign is now posted up on the Ascot site fence... means the green is about to pop! Over two years has gone into this collaboration with @loucaszahosarchitects for our great clients. Keep an eye on this residence as it nears completion by @thallonmolegroup and @martinbrothers_landscaping over the next few months...
